International Student Information

Visa

  1. SAE UK is approved to accept foreign students
  2. Some students will need to apply for a study visa
  3. EU nationals (i.e. EU passport holders) do not need a visa (see Appendix for current list of EU countries)
  4. Students from all other countries (including USA, Canada, Australia etc) need a study visa
  5. SAE UK can not provide direct assistance with the visa application process
  6. Students should get information and start the process at http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/students
  7. The process (briefly):
    1. Student applies to SAE UK
    2. The student should get all necessary information and guidance at the website (see above)
    3. Once accepted, SAE will issue an enrolment confirmation
    4. This confirmation is an essential element of the visa application
    5. If everything goes well, a study visa is issued
    6. SAE Administration must be informed about the status of the visa (issued or denied)
    7. As the UK has a broad and long tradition of foreign students, it is usually no problem to obtain a study visa. However, it should be noted that it may be the case that the authorities may treat an applicant differently depending on the country of origin, i.e. for some nationalities it seems easier than for others
    8. A study visa is usually for the duration of the course (quite often with a bit of buffer after the last day of the course)
    9. A study visa allows students to work for up to 20 hours per week. However, as regulations may change this should be verified on the quoted website

Accommodation

  • As of the time of writing SAE does not directly offer accommodation at any of its locations in the UK. However each campus can provide information on available accommodation
  • Especially in typical student cities such as Oxford or London, it is usually not a problem to find student-type accommodation
  • Each SAE provides a list of accommodation opportunities, i.e. links to student housing companies, websites and estate agents (real estate brokers), see Appendix 2
  • Quite often rent is quoted ‘per week’. Students need to bear in mind that every month is 4.333 weeks in duration. This means that they need to multiple the cost per week by 4.333 to get the exact price of the monthly rent due
  • Rent may also be quoted per calendar month (pcm)
  • Please note that a deposit is usually paid alongside the initial month’s rent and it is usually the equivalent to one month’s rent. It can be totally or partially refunded at the end of the contract, since the landlord may keep back some of it for repairs/cleaning to be done to the flat/house
  • SAE offers an email-list service for enrolled students for setting up flatshares. Information how to access this is provided to students who have finished the enrolment process
